Do you want to save the Windows 10 desktop icon layout? On Windows 10 desktop icons rearrange and no one wants it. As it tends to happen randomly but if you have a multi-monitor set-up you can then experience it most often than users with a single display. There are few apps, if you keep them executing, can secure the icons from rearranging but they might drag your PC down. Another option is to store the layout of the desktop icon which you can do with ReIcon.
In the modern version of Windows like Windows 10, the Desktop folder contents are stored in two locations. The first one is in the “Common Desktop”, located in the folder C:\Users\Public\Desktop. The next one is in the current user profile, %userprofile%\Desktop. So, Windows display the contents of both folders in a single view.
Certainly, Windows 10 is unable to remember the Desktop icon position. You can also notice the problem if your icons are placed in other parts of your desktop, but when you restart your PC, they will automatically reorder to some default position. Many users deal with the issues differently. If you want to fix this annoyance, then stay with us!
Save Windows 10 Desktop Icon Layout
Download or install the ReIcon and then arrange the icons on your display the way you want them. After this, just launch and run the app then tap the save icon. However, a new ‘profile’ created in the app and basically it is the saved icon layout. You can just close the app and wait for Windows 10 to merge the layout.
A layout contains a name, date stamp, and time an icon count i.e., the total number of icons was on the desktop screen when the layout was restored and an ID. If you want to rename a layout, simply tap the Name field and it will then become editable. Input whatever name you like to provide it, and click Enter to save the name.
If you want to restore/recover it. Simply execute the app and choose the profile. Now head over to Edit>Restore Icon Layout and your layout will be recovered quickly. You can then create and save lots of icon layouts as you want. You can then recover whichever one suits you the best. The app works quite well with a multi-monitor setup.
There are some exceptions though. If you’ve, for instance, removing an item from your desktop, the app can’t recover it. It might impact the icon arrangement if you’ve set them to make a grid automatically. If you know you’ve erased an item from the desktop that was present when you stored an icon layout, you should then turn snap to grid off and then recover the icon layout.
ReIcon doesn’t want to be installed so ensure you don’t leave the app somewhere you might mistakenly remove it as it saves the profile in the same folder that it executes from. Simply moves it to a safe location before you use it to store and restore icon layouts.
The app can work only for the desktop icon layout but not for the files in folders. The files in folders lack a ‘layout’. They’re arranged by different sorting criteria so the app can’t work there.
DesktopOK is another amazing software when it comes to saving the positions of desktop icons. It can save many layouts and can also automatically store desktop icon layouts.
